Hi everybody, few months ago I went to the beach, and got this shot with my cellphone (mobile/handy) for the water of the ocean:

I was thinking to use it as texture for planets, I did try before but I didn't like my results, I made this new planet right now and posted it here, what are your suggestion, feel free to use the texture image to create your taste planet:

I went for an icyish look in the end.
I find using S3D smooths things out too much though so I went the circle selection route. Don`t know if it made much of a difference though.

Great starting picture :)

As you all know I'm not too clever at the space stuff ... mine came out like stone with maybe some ice or snow on it :lol: :?

If you can get the green part more white, then it will look much closer.
However, if you look at the photos of earth, you will see it's just mainly blue for ocean.
You don't see much waves and stuff that high up.

Edit: WB, that's a close texture like the photo, but too much white parts make it not look like planet. As stated above.

Thanks every one for responding and giving some good suggestions;
@ Goonfella, I like the planet, it has an eclipse case rather than a light from a source of light :)
@ A Fleeting Glimpse, nice one I got same result with negation mode, is that the same effect?

@ WelshBlue, Good one and nice idea :idea: :) see what I got from your effect:

@ Ash, Not necessarily to be like the planet earth, I was just wondering if I can use that texture for a planet with water or dry doesn't matter, do you mean something like this?:

Yeah, IMO, looks better with white than green-ish.

@ Ash ... I guess I'll have to get a ruck of sci-fi dvd's and watch them :lol:
I think I'm only ok at replicating textures I know something about ... the rest are long stretches of anyone's imagination :wink:

@ Sargon ... the second one does look a lot better, also great job on the skimming stones :D

I like Sargon's first one. Nice contrast between the planet & the backgound. A few more elements would make a great starscape. Different but I guess it depends on the effect you wanted to create.
