We're going to be making a helmet like the one I made for here ...

Think outside the box for your textures. Pretty realistic results can happen with the right textures and playing with Blend Modes

This is really cool.

I much prefer your headband to mine :D
Thanks for the metal tip, that'll come in really handy

Great tut Welshy. Here`s my go. I used an eggshell texture on the horns (very subtle) and tried to get the colour looking as boney as poss. -

Image

edit - aaargh - jaggies where the horn slots in! Forgot to use AA to smooth them out.

Cursed jaggies!
Goonfella, have you abandoned Alpha Masking?

=====================================

~WelshBlue~,

For the headband, a duplicate layer had a red Multiply merged onto pre-Shape3D band.

Then, Conditional Hue/Saturation Horizontal Fade.

Duplicate layer, make bottom layer black-and-white.

Duplicate B&W layer, with one set to Multiply, one to Additive,
so that the opacity for the bright and dark could be adjusted separately.

The full-color Horizontal Fade layer at the top of the stack was set to Color Burn with low opacity.

Very nice Goon. Good idea giving the horns more of a tan colour.
I was going to do something like that, but I always think a more 'basic' tut gets more exploration ... and that's shown in the 3 excellent images yourself, Sarkut and Olav have made. All so very different.

A pleasure to spend the time writing it for 3 excellent responses.

@ Sarkut ... Alpha Masking ... I've never, ever used it.
2 years later I still can't get my head around it :???2:
Nor do I re-size any images. I just dpy everything to death :lol3: :lol3: (Actually, slight blurs sometimes get me out of a hole ...)

Thanks for the tip on the rim. You can never get too much knowledge, ideas

Sarkut, I havn`t abandoned alpha masking. Like Welshy I just find it easier to use AA , Feather and/or reduce the size of the image. I would have forgotten about the alpha masking as well anyway. :lol3:

Glad you like mine Welshy. Thanks. :wink2:

Isn't it odd how we all have different ways of working but each of us is able to use that way to perfection.

I had a hard time trying to follow the shiny orbs bit, so I did my own thing. Thanks so much for writing the tute Welshy! It's taken mw a while to get to do this but I am happy with the result. I might do this again but start out on a bigger canvas since I know basically what to do now.

Ah, didn't take enough of the surplus address out - should work now.

Barbie, can't see the full sized image. It seem you have set it to private browsing only, is there a way you can circumvent it?

Just a heads up to anyone who may want to do this in the future ... copy it if you can 'cos my PB account is getting pretty full, so I'm going to be trimming images on dead tuts both here and on the main board

A super tutorial Welshy - thank you! My only problem was that I ended up with a "white" bulge under the helmet, so I have left the background white, in order to hide that :???2:

Pixey, the design on the helmet is really cool!

I still haven't finished this one, I got as far as the horns and had to stop before my head exploded. :x

I copied it into Publisher - I don't work well with Word - and now I'm looking through other tuts to decide which ones to save.
