Yes that's right. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it, but I know it is as of right now totally inoperable. I still have lots of campus computers to access the internet with, so I'll be around, just maybe not as frequently as I'd like, if there are any emergencies (along the lines great spambot invasion of '07) the fastest way to reach me would be at the Email below. PS How would you guys feel about adding a chat box or room to the site? They recently made one available as a free MOD for the forums.

Ben, really sorry to hear that. Mine died last year or at least I thought it did. I have a wonderful techie mate who after much head scratching etc, removed the battery & ran it straight off the mains. It was the battery that was shorting out everything. Could be worth a try?
As for the chat - you beauty! What a great idea!
Hope you get the laptop sorted fast.

Shame about the laptop Ben. So far I`ve been lucky enough never to have experienced something like that (touch wood). Mind you I have only had a laptop for three years! About the chat room, I think it`s a great idea - as long as enough people use it.

I am somewhat torn about the chat room. Most of us are in different time zones, and I don't see how it would work out. Between the arcade we have on the board and adding a chat room, while it would be a great way for all of us to get know one another than through static posting, I feel it may be an added distraction. For some time, it may be a welcomed distraction, but for another, it may be a bothersome. Just providing a couple of angles to look at though.
BTW, depending on your laptop, I would have the battery replaced. Try to keep it simple before junking it.

Wasn`t there a chat room on the main forum for a time? I think it was stopped because of the reasons already mentioned - i.e not enough people using it because of the different time zones, and also because it ended up being a target for spammers. Correct me if I`m wrong but I do know it never lasted very long.
While it would be nice to have one here I think things like this have to be taken into consideration . Maybe the fact that the guys on this forum are more of a small community would make a difference.

Tough to moderate because we have only 3, two are admins and one is Ash, who hasn't been on the board for a while.
Speaking of moderator, and this may start an off-topic discussion in this thread, but is there a chance we may need to add one more moderator to help keep this board running while the other three are busy with their life? Just a thought I had been bouncing around in my head, and Chad gave me an opportunity to speak it.

I was thinking the same thing. Someone who knows this stuff pretty well would be a good nominee.

Good points on the chat, the difficulty in moderation was the reason I did not add it right away.
I have confirmed that the problem with my computer is the hard drive. Which is replaceable, and my files should be all backed up elsewhere so I am not panicking (the moral of this story is BACK UP YOUR DATA, your computer is an evil beast that is actively seeking the worst possible time to fail).

Good news...pleased to hear it. Yep, backups are essential. When I did uni, I backed to a flash drive. Each week I'd back up everything. I had a laptop catch fire...problem with the cable ribbon to the monitor.
Anyway, glad your laptop is salvagable.

How do you backup your files? I really just used that utility once with Norton 360, and it took very long time to backup everything, and I thought when I will backup again the program will recognize the file that been backed up and start just backup the new ones, then I realized that I was dreaming, it just start doing whole procedure again , since then I do backup my files manually, on CDs or DVDs or USB drive, USB is the best for me cause I can reload new ones and delete old ones ( the whole folder) I know it sounds crazy, but really I don't know which way is the best, faster and easier, btw I never tried Windows backup utility.

Sargon...I usually copy and paste everything to my Flash drive. That way it will override the original and then post what is new. That method saves me a lot of trouble. I usually back up all my documents, pictures, and PDN files. I am trying to get a lot of Open Source softwares so I don't have the hassle of reinstalling software that forces you to use authentic keys. The biggest trouble with Windows.
