What do you mean about doing it with smoke? As a texture?

...or are you talking about having a sort of glassy sphere with some kind of swirly smoke inside?

Where somke is inside the ball.Is there a way to do that?

Absolutely...I'll have to think about the "how"...

Ben, any good thoughts on making swirly smoke filling in a particular shape?

I've been thinking about it all morning, I have some ideas but I won't have time to try them out until later tonight.

Also maybe this discussion should be moved to the "Help me make something, please!" section.

OK, Here is what I came up with:

Is that close to the effect that you wanted to achieve?

The smoke is based on my explosion tutorial, the globe was a radial gradient in a circle, I did not have time to make a whole marble, maybe I'll have time tomorrow.

remember that tut on the smoking cigarette? how about that smoke or there was one tut with a coffee cup with steam rising off it. (can't locate by search)

I'd make a sphere in 3d two tones white both semi transparent

and pop the smoke in underneath layer.
