Helen I just thought I would mention that you have linked to the original version of the Shaped Gradient - v1.1 , which is different to the one you used in the tutorial ( v1.5). This could confuse people (it did me as you`ll see from my PM! )

Here`s my first go. OK OK I cheated with the stems & leaves but this tut is about the flower after all. Also I just wanted to see how they would look with real foliage instead of some made by me. I think I should have used a thinner brush though. I chose a size of 10 but now I think somewhere around 4,5,6 or 7 would have been better.
By the way, I used the same method to cut out the flowers as I did on the lion. No Alpha Masking involved. And for the leaves I used Alphaspace + Feather to clear the white background..

Wow...that's gorgeous! I think that the thickness of the brush was fine. Roses are usually thicker in texture anyway, but some types are a little thinner. Great outcome! Love it.

This is actually HELEN 's tutorial but with some modifications and a solution for the Alias "jaggy edges" problem. I hope HELEN you don't mind if I am posting it here.
2- On a new layer name it outlines, draw up the out lines of your rose, using paint brush with 2 pixels width after disabling the anti-aliasing option:
3- Duplicate outlines layers and apply the Trail 3d plugin on the bottom one.
4- Feather the top outlines layer as it needs and set the blend mode to Additive then merge it to the bottom layer:
5- Duplicate the merged layer and set the blend mode of top one to Color Burn:
