I've set myself a task of spending at least half an hour most days going through the backlog of unfinished stuff. (And PM's Lance ) I know it's A.A.'ed I can sort that I'm also happy (ish) with the texture and colour Any tips on the lid, trying to keep a decent 'lip' and the bulges you can see on the googled one would be most appreciated. I'm not sure if I'm going to keep the dented look running down the front of the reference one ... thoughts ? Maybe I should have made it in 3 parts ? If I can finish this it can go into another unfinished file ... then just one more thing to make and I can tick 2 files off *** actually, I'm not happy with the texture Some Relief possibly ? and get rid of that horrible grey look

What PM? I don't see one. On-topic...ignoring the AA like you said...couple of ideas. For the lid, I would use bevel (Effect>Selection>Bevel) and use a low setting. Repeat it once more, but with the lighting direction reversed. Feather the lid with a 1,1 set with true feather. Ctrl+F several time to resize the lid until it's about the same size of the top portion of the barrel. For the spigot access (I can't think of what it's actually called ), I would make a small elliptical circle, fill with black. Try to get the perspective correct, or use octagonal/reshape matte plugin if that helps. Use Ash's 3D metal chrome tut to make it drop down. You once made a rusty crate. Can't you reuse the texture? If so, try to use S3D set on cylinder mode. Maybe make 3 portions with different scales. Make the banding stand out by adding a bit of bulge.

I haven't wrote the PM yet I can't see the wood for the trees sometimes. Bevel Selection is one of my most used Plug-Ins and I never thought of that. I'll try that. I'm sure I unchecked a layer and didn't re-check it before saving that as a png ... it didn't look as crappy in the file. RE: the crate texture ... it's got black lines running through it I'm trying for smooth but rustyish look for a grungey factory image, that's got diamond plate in it, some chains etc ... so that crate texture was too bumpy. easy enough to re-create but if you saw the background stuff you'd see why that colour/ texture looks right ... I think I'll re-make the barrel in thirds, it'll be easier to get the definition I think ? and definitely needs the seam down the side

You can make it in 3 ( 5...+Rim at the top and the lid) parts if you wish, I might have done it that way too. But why make in 3 ( 5) parts if you can make it in 1 ( 3).... too many numbers Just need to refine your texture and use S3D.... Bulges, use either power stretch or Point warp. I'll give it a try when I have time. BTW, PDN can make it much much better than that googled image.

yup and tbh your current attempt looks like the rust is more realistic than that googled image

No further proof is needed that I sometimes think too much and too deeply about things. I don't know how long I spent trying to get those black lines right ... and even tho' I've used the technique before I never thought of drawing them on my texture before using S3D on this project. I'm a bit embarressed but still glad I asked Thanks for the input guys

NP. hmm...looking at it again, the rusty texture is good, but the non-rusty should be smoother.....ha I just gave myself advice... Can still be better I guess...

My name is Lance and I'm PDNocholic too. Both of your attempts look good and I had a good laugh at you, Ash. thanks for that. I think I overdid it when I suggested 3 layers when it could had been done using textures. Maybe I'll attempt one. When I'm near my PC.

I'm WB aka Welsh (y) aka WelshBlue aka whatever anyone wants to call me ... ... and I'm scared Ash is gonna stick me head-first into a barrel Cool barrels Ash but I think I'm going to use a wooden one instead ... Joke !! Having a quick look through this, my wife's right; for an intelligient bloke I'm as ffffick as the proverbial sometimes. The beer stein I'm still working on (One of those unfinished projects Click) was made exactly the same way, a few different textures on different layers, merge and S3D. Why the hell I didn't think of doing that on the barrel, is anyone's guess One good thing that came out of it, Ash had a break from glass
