In order to complete this tutorial, you will need the following plugins:
Start out with a canvas (the default size is fine), and apply a radial gradient from corner to corner:

Image

Next, duplicate this layer, and use the jitter plugin on the top layer (I used an amount of 20):
Image

Merge the top layer down, and use the Polar to Rect plugin at its default settings:
Image

The ring pattern is very symmetrical, so (this is an optional step) you can grab pieces of the image and stretch or compress them:
Image
Image

Eventually, you'll be done resizing things:
Image

Crop the image to just the "wood" part.
Press [shift] and magic-wand in the transparent area to select all of the transparent pixels, then press [ctrl]+[i] to invert the selection.
Press [ctrl]+[shift]+[x] to crop the image to just the selection:
Image

I think it looks better stretched taller, so I doubled the height of the image by using Image->Resize from the Image menu:
Image

Now, we'll apply a color tint and get a basic oak board:
Image

Playing around with hue and saturation, I got a respectable pine:
Image

...and cedar:

A little more finesse with curves or other color or hue effects can get you a wide variety of interesting results.

Have fun!

I didn't have the jitter plugin and I was too lazy to download it :P , so I used add noise and cross blur.

After reading Ash's post on the main forums (... and feeling guilty) I thought I'd start off by thanking this tutorial for all the wood textures in my gallery. It really helped me understand PDN and then Ash's Easy 3D Chrome :D

Martel, be careful of the last post date. Only post this late if you're posting a result and some good input.

Yes, this post is almost a year old. Please be aware of that fact and keep that in mind when posting.

warfighter and Briamoth, it's okay. We don't have a rule on necroposting, and Martel was simply saying she liked this tutorial and used it make her walnut floor.

I know it's confusing to see people responding to old post, but the way we see it, Martel is simply responding to the tutorial's author request to "have fun."

I know we don't have a rule, I was just saying to keep in mind that it's not the newest post in the world. Haha.

Briamoth,

Thanks for the heads up.

I am still new around here and have not figured out the way around.

Don't worry. I haven't been here long; but i can say: If you make a mistake, you get a friendly advice. That is all. No :evil2:
Good thing to keep this tread open. It is an interesting tut.

This is always the starting point for any wood textures I make. If you think outside the box you get some great results.

Add another layer after you've made your wood, use clouds @ a scale of approx' 800 and a roughness of 18 (ish) then run the Height Field to Normal plug-in. Make that B & W then set to Overlay or Multiply it adds some knots to the wood.

It's great keeping the old tuts here ... I really miss some of the older tuts that have gotten purged on the main board
