I'm doing a Photshop tutorial and have come upon the instruction "try to rasterize the layer". I've done a bit of Googling and am still confused. As far as I can make out it seems to involve a 'blank' layer somehow :mrgreen2: Is this required in paint.net? Would love some suggestions please :D

Paint.NET is a raster editor, so every layer is a raster layer.

However the "try to" part of the phrase seems suspect as a tutorial instruction.

It may be that the author means something else.

Can you post a link to the tutorial so that the phrase can be seen in context?

Photoshop supports "shape layers" and raster layers. The shape layers are effectively vector, while the raster are bitmap. "Try to rasterize" the layer means "try to take the shape layer and turn it into a bitmap layer." Since PDN doesn't have shape layers, you can ignore this step without any ill effects.

Have a nice day,

Hi Sarkut- thanks so much for your prompt response. Here is the link:

http://www.adobetutorialz.com/articles/ ... stmas-Tree

and it is at step 4, where it says "try to rasterize the layer. But, as you say that
layers are already Paint.Net rastered - if that's a word - then I guess I don't have to worry and this is a definate plus for Paint.Net. My apologies - it is an Adobe tut that I'm following.

Thanks too to @Sidneys. Never a dull moment around here.... always something new comes to light. Thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks for posting the link.

Yes, the rasterize bit is already a fact with Paint.NET.

Looking forward to your result. :)

PDN being a a solely raster editor is both good and bad really. Good in that it keeps things simple, but bad in that if you draw a shape in PS it can be enlarged without any ill effects as it is a vector image . Whereas in PDN that same shape enlarged by the same amount would look a bit blocky instead of retaining the smooth lines of the vector image in PS.

But give me PDN over PS any day. I can easily put up with not having shape layers ! :D

True, but you can do that in PDN too if you really know what you're doing.
EDIT: to an extent, of course.

Have a really nice, great day,

True, a vector program can do a better job at resizing a drawing. If you want to do something like that in PDN, you have to plan ahead.
Always start with a much bigger canvas then you want the finished picture to be. And then resize it down later. Sometimes i struggle with these things. Sometimes i fail. But i know it can be done.

Thanks so much everyone for these tips, which I only just noticed, as the "Subscribe topic" seems not to be working on this forum at the moment :cry2:
